IoT infrastructure for inland fresh water fish farming

A network of Sensor Nodes spread across fish farms,
which continuously monitor the water parameters and concentration of toxic substances and report to the farms on time
to take the required action to improve productivity, improve the health of fish.
Also to detect or avoid water poisoning, fish mortality like activities.

Rural Development Centre (RDC) at IIT Hyderabad

RDC at IIT Hyderabad was established with a vision to support rural development initiatives of the Government of India through innovative technologies being developed at IIT Hyderabad. One of the objective of RDC is to improve the productivity of Fish farmers by providing technology to monitor water quality and and scientific knowledge on fish farming to avoid fish mortality.


Architecture

Visualize water quality parameters in cloud platforms and mobile applications which have been collected from various remote sensing nodes. Sensor nodes will have one controller to collect data from various onboard sensors, then packetize and send the data to the aggregator through a local ad-hoc wireless network. Aggregator will collect data from all sensing nodes and will send them to the cloud environment using a wifi module. Same data can be fetched from the cloud platform and will be visualized in user-friendly mobile applications. Machine learning based algorithms needs to be implemented on hardware or on web server to predict the water quality, predictive actions, warning conditions, alarming conditions and so on.

Device Use Information

Sensor nodes will have one controller to collect data from various onboard sensors, then packetize and send the data to the aggregator through a local ad-hoc wireless network. Water quality parameters considered are temperature, Total dissolved solid (TDS), Potential of Hydrogen (pH), Dissolve Oxygen (DO) and Oxidation reduction potential (ORP), Dissolve Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Dissolve Nitrogen (N2), Dissolved Ammonia (NH3), Dissolve Nitrate(NO3-),Dissolve Nitrite (NO2-).

Sensor Data -> Arduino -> Lora Tx -> Rx Lora -> Raspberry Pi -> WiFi ->Google Sheet-> IITH Web Server

Water Quality Information

Water Quality can be affected by small changes in pH,Dissolved oxygen,Ammonia, alkalinity so it is necessary to take care of these water parameters in fish farming. Extreme pH values can kill your fish and Dissolved oxygen is only option for their respiration.

Fish Disease

The bad water quality affect the health of fish and causes several diseases. These diseases include epidermal papilloma, fin/tail rot, gill disease, hyperplasia, liver damage, neoplasia and ulceration.
